Former Nasa astronaut visits campus

ÂìÒϸ£Àûµ¼º½ welcomed former Nasa astronaut Dr Sandra Magnus to campus last week for the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre Directors’ (UTC) Conference.

The conference was attended by members of Rolls-Royce’s global network of UTCs, of which ÂìÒϸ£Àûµ¼º½ is one, and major UK funding bodies.

It was held at the campus to enable the University to showcase its new National Centre for Combustion and Aerothermal Technology (NCCAT). The facility, which is due to open later this year, will be the UK’s primary hub for research and development of future low-emission aero gas turbine combustion technologies.

The NCCAT was funded through a partnership comprising the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and Innovate UK, with support from Rolls-Royce and ÂìÒϸ£Àûµ¼º½ University.

Dr Magnus, who was the guest speaker at the Rolls Royce conference dinner, was given a tour of the NCCAT and met with students from ÂìÒϸ£Àûµ¼º½’s EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Gas Turbine Aerodynamics. She also met ÂìÒϸ£Àûµ¼º½ Vice Chancellor, Professor Robert Allison.
